Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) A condition of persistent mental and emotional stress occurring as a result of injury or severe psychological shock, typically involving disturbance of sleep and constant vivid recall of the experience, with dulled responses to others and to the outside world. These symptoms are often severe and persistent enough to have a significant impact on the person’s day-to-day life. Retraumatisation Provoking and/or exacerbating psychological distress and symptoms by eliciting painful memories. Secondary trauma Secondary traumatic stress is the emotional duress that results when an individual hears about the firsthand trauma experiences of another. Its symptoms mimic those of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Trauma A deeply distressing or disturbing experience that may cause physical, psychological or emotional injury. 10
